⚠ Hazardous Waste

Got Old CRT Monitors?
We're One of the Few Who Can Take Them.

CRT monitors and televisions are classified as hazardous waste under UK regulations because of their leaded glass and phosphor coatings. Most consumer recyclers refuse them. We don't — we're licensed for it, and we process them through the correct UK hazardous-waste route.

⚠️

Why CRT Disposal Is Different

A typical 19" CRT monitor contains 2–4kg of lead in the funnel glass plus barium and strontium in the screen glass. Crack one open in the wrong way and you've got a hazardous-waste incident on your hands.

Binning CRTs in regular waste is a breach of the Hazardous Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2005. Even storing them improperly can attract Environment Agency scrutiny.

  • Leaded funnel glass requires specialist handling
  • Phosphor-coated screens classified as hazardous
  • Capacitors may retain charge for months
  • Improper disposal carries fines up to £5,000+

How We Handle CRT Disposal

  • Licensed transport — Hazardous Waste consignment note issued at collection
  • Charge discharge — Capacitors safely discharged before any dismantling
  • Sealed handling — CRTs transported sealed and palletised, not loose
  • Licensed reprocessors — Leaded glass routed only to permitted UK facilities
  • Full documentation — Hazardous Waste Consignment Note + disposal certificate
  • No penalty fees — CRTs included in standard collection pricing

Material Recovery

What Comes Out of Every Monitor We Process

A typical 24" LCD monitor weighs around 4–5kg. Roughly 85% of that returns to the supply chain as recovered material — keeping rare metals in circulation and out of UK landfill.

Aluminium & Steel Frame, stand, internal chassis — smelted for new electronics and construction
    ~35%
  • 🧴
Plastics (ABS, Polycarbonate) Bezels, rear casings — sorted by polymer and reprocessed into manufacturing pellets

Expert Insight

Monitor Recycling Done
The Compliant Way

Old monitors look like simple kit, but they sit at the awkward intersection of bulky waste, hazardous components and electronic recycling regulations. Here's how Tech Labz makes the whole thing painless.

⚠️ The Hazardous Side of Monitors

Why You Can't Just Skip Them

Skipping monitors in general waste isn't just bad for the planet — it's a breach of the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 and Environmental Protection Act 1990. Even modern LCDs can contain mercury backlights (older models) and bromine-based flame retardants that aren't legal landfill.

The CRT Problem

Old tube monitors are the worst offender — leaded glass, phosphor coatings and stored capacitor charge. We're licensed to handle them and they're included in standard collection pricing.

♻️ The Recovery Side

~85% Recovered Material

Each monitor we process gives back roughly 85% recovered material — aluminium, steel, plastics, glass, copper and trace precious metals — all routed back into UK manufacturing through licensed reprocessors.

Refurbish First

Where monitors still work, they're refurbished via our remarketing channels and resold — extending device life, generating residual value for your finance team, and reducing demand for new manufacturing.

Why Tech Labz Is the UK's Trusted Monitor Recycling Partner

Old monitors are awkward. They're heavy, fragile, often forgotten in storerooms, and quietly illegal to put in general waste. Most facilities managers eventually look for a specialist recycler — and the choice usually comes down to: who'll take all of them, who'll do it free, and who'll give me the paperwork I need.

Tech Labz checks all three. We operate from a secure facility in Bolton and serve businesses across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — from a 5-monitor cupboard clearance in Manchester to a 500-screen refresh across an NHS trust.

What Happens to Your Monitors After Collection

  1. Each monitor is logged on arrival with type, size, brand and visible condition
  2. Smart displays and signage units have any cached configuration data securely wiped
  3. Working monitors enter our test-and-grade refurbishment line for resale
  4. Non-working monitors are dismantled — frames, stands, panels, PCBs separated
  5. CRT monitors are routed through licensed hazardous-waste reprocessors
  6. Recovered materials baled and sent to UK reprocessors (aluminium, steel, plastics, glass, copper)
  7. Final ~1% non-recoverable residue goes to certified WEEE recycling
  8. Documentation issued: WEEE transfer note, recycling certificate, any hazardous consignment note

Specialist Capabilities Most Recyclers Skip

Large-Format Display De-Rig

55"+ signage, video walls and command-room displays often need two-person lift and bespoke transport. We have the kit and the trained crews — included in the free collection service.

Interactive & Smart Display Handling

SMART boards, Promethean, kiosk units and meeting-room signage often retain network credentials, WiFi configs and tenant data in firmware. We securely reset all of these before processing — no hidden data leakage in your disposal route.

Mixed-Vintage Cupboard Clearance

If your storeroom has a mix of dusty CRTs, broken LCDs and forgotten signage from three office moves ago — we'll quote, collect and certify everything in one visit.

Combine With Wider IT Lifecycle Services

Most monitor refreshes happen alongside computer refreshes. Combining with our computer recycling, laptop recycling or secure data destruction services means a single supplier, single project manager, single set of paperwork — and meaningful operational savings against juggling multiple vendors.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions UK facilities and IT teams ask us most often before booking monitor collection.

Our service includes free UK collection, individual monitor assessment, secure handling for fragile and large-format units, hazard-safe dismantling, material recovery and environmentally compliant recycling. You also receive full WEEE documentation including a Certificate of Destruction, plus a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note if any CRT or hazardous-grade units are included.
Yes. We operate to a 99% landfill diversion target with around 85% material recovery per unit. Our processes comply with UK WEEE Regulations and prioritise reuse, refurbishment, parts harvesting and material recovery — keeping monitors in service where possible and rare materials in the circular economy.
Yes — we handle CRT, LCD, LED, OLED, IPS, ultrawide, curved, interactive touchscreens, gaming monitors, professional colour-calibrated displays, medical/industrial displays, large-format commercial signage and video walls. Every major brand, all sizes from 15" to 98"+, working or broken.
Yes — and we're one of the few UK recyclers that takes them at no extra charge. CRT monitors contain leaded glass, phosphor coatings and potentially-charged capacitors, which classifies them as hazardous waste under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005. We're licensed for hazardous-waste transport, process CRTs through permitted UK reprocessors, and issue a Hazardous Waste Consignment Note for your records.
Most standard monitors don't store personal data, so no — but smart displays, interactive whiteboards, digital signage and kiosk units can retain configuration data, WiFi credentials, firmware settings and cached network info. We securely reset all of these before processing, so nothing sensitive leaves with the device.
Yes — and we'd always rather refurbish than recycle. Working monitors are tested, graded and resold via our IT asset remarketing programme. Functional components from non-working units — stands, cables, circuit boards, panels — are salvaged for refurbishment where possible. Where there's residual value, it's passed back to you as a rebate.
For UK business and bulk collections, yes — collection is free. We provide GPS-tracked, insured pickup nationwide. Specialist handling for very large or fragile units (75"+ commercial signage, video walls) is also included at no extra charge, and CRT monitors don't carry any penalty fee either.
